Immense R.A.F. machine being tuned up before starting off for Germany with a load of bomb

Image by National Library of Scotland
R.A.F. bomber being tuned, France, during World War I. The size of these machines is conveyed by the perspective in the photograph. The men working on the body of the machine are dwarfed and the wing sweeping across the top of the picture dominates the scene. The mood of the photographer as a result is quite powerful and overbearing.
Two new types of bombs were developed for aircraft use, one for carpet bombing wider targets, the ‘aerial torpedoes’, and a smaller dart for more specific use, called a ‘flechette’.

A few nice aerial images I found:
C.O. with pilot and observer referring to photos and maps prior to setting out for the German lines

Image by National Library of Scotland
Fighter pilot and Commanding Officer checking a map, in France, during World War I. Standing in front of his two-seater biplane, this pilot refers to a map reference with the Commanding Officer of his company. Inside the plane, his co-pilot checks over the instrument panel with a member of the ground staff who is taking notes. A machine-gun, complete with a swivelling accessory, is attached to the rear cockpit.
An aerial battle between two or more aeroplanes was called a ‘dogfight’. At the start of the war, fighter planes had two seats, with the pilot sitting in the front and a gunner occupying the rear cockpit. As the war continued, however, single piloted aircraft became more prevalent, since they were clearly more effective during a ‘dogfight ‘. During a ‘dogfight ‘, pilots used cloud cover as an aerial form of camouflage, and often swooped down on their prey from out of the sun.

Image by State Library and Archives of Florida
Local call number: FLBA004; Media 1979-10
Title: [Betty Skelton Day]
Date of film: July 11, 1948
Physical descrip: B&W; silent; original length: 7:38
General note: This is an excerpt of footage from a ceremony honoring Betty Skelton, the U.S. Feminine Aerobatic Stunt Flying Champion, held at the Tampa, Florida Airport. The U.S. Army Air Corps Band plays as Betty Skelton appears and waves to the camera. A number of planes are shown performing aerial stunts and trick flying. A biplane tows a banner that reads "It’s here – Fort Pitt Beer!!" For the finale, Betty Skelton climbs inside a modified North American P-51 Mustang and zips around showing off her flight technique. When she lands she is presented with a bundle of flowers as she speaks to a crowd of spectators. Produced by Tampa Home Movie.

One night’s rations for a bombing squadron

Image by National Library of Scotland
Several hundred bombs are laid out in rows on the grass. According to the original caption these are the bombs for one night’s bombing by an air squadron. It seems unlikely that they were usually laid out in this way, which would have been cumbersome for loading. It appears probable, therefore, that this was an arranged shot for propaganda purposes.
The Allied bombing was concentrated on weakening enemy artillery and communications.
